Lasik Cost

The LASIK eye surgery, apart from its contribution to solve visionary problems has been wide spread due to its affordability. However, most of the people have been unaware of the hidden costs that form a major portion of the LASIK surgery that is seemingly cheap. Therefore, before going for a LASIK surgery, individuals need to understand the cost of the surgery, which might vary depending on the extent of complications combined with other relevant factors.

The doctors or the consultants are in a better position to judge the fees of the surgery, depending on individual cases and thus, need to discuss them clearly with the clients regarding the various steps and procedures involved. The cost of LASIK surgery may vary for each eye according to the complication in the operating process, the experience and qualifications of the performing surgeon, the types of equipment used, and whether a follow-up enhancement program is included. The most common ways of making a LASIK surgery payment are cash, checks, credit cards, flex plans, monthly-extended payment plans, and insurance benefits.

Payments through credit cards are accepted by way of Visa, MasterCard, and American Express, allowing the patients to arrange and schedule the payment at the same time, offering points every time they are used. Flexi plans are offered by companies to their employees, allowing them to withhold a defined amount through payroll deductions, which can be paid at the time of a LASIK surgery. However, in such cases, individuals first require to find out if they are eligible for a LASIK surgery. Monthly extended payment plans offer a lot of flexibility and can be extremely beneficial for patients wherein, they can opt for "zero interest paybacks" and "no money down" facilities to pay for their eye surgery. In addition, patients can take the help of selected insurance companies offering defined benefits to cover LASIK surgery, with certain conditions.

It is recommended not to fall prey to the marketing procedures of LASIK surgery and incur costs un-necessarily. Patients are also suggested not to give any "non-refundable" deposits.

A Better Option For Lasik Surgery: The Intralase Method

Improvisation is the key to better performance always, and this holds good for lasik surgery too. Over the years, scientists have been looking at ways and means to improve the quality of lasik surgery.

The surgery has involved two steps: cutting open a flap of the cornea and then making the required adjustment. Usually, the cornea is cut using a hand held device called a microkeratome having an oscillating metal blade.

With the invention of the IntraLase method, this inconsistency is now taken out of the equation. The IntraLase method, also commonly called 'bladeless lasik', is a breakthrough innovation in lasik surgery.

The IntraLase method takes away the need for a handheld blade during the surgery. The hand-held microkeratome while being extremely useful, came with its own set of problems.

While this process has been relatively safe, the one area where it has failed to deliver is the ability to provide consistency in depth and thickness while making an incision. This is primarily because of the inconsistency in the precision levels provided by the microkeratome. Besides there have been other risk areas, such as the flap being too thin, often leading to a tear in the flap, or the flap not being cut out entirely.

IntraLase is a computer-controlled technology used in lasik surgery that enables a surgeon to cut through the corneal surface and create the required flap with utmost accuracy and precision.

It delivers pulses of light in rapid succession, at intervals of one quadrillionth of a second to a specific depth. The depth to which the pulses are to be delivered can be fixed prior to the procedure itself, as also the position at which the flap is to be made.

IntraLase is the first of its kind used for lasik surgery, and the bladeless aspect of the procedure is a big plus for surgeons looking for the right depth and positioning.

While a microkeratome can create a cut that is one-dimensional, the IntraLase technology enables surgeons to detail all the specific aspects of the flap ? the thickness of the flap, the exact location on the cornea where it is to be created, the circumference of the flap, the angles of the edges of the flap.

This possibility enables surgeons to provide highly specific flaps for each patient, something that was not possible with the microkeratome. This is a huge advantage over other existing procedures of lasik surgery, as it increases manifold the accuracy and specificity of individual procedures for different patients.

The wide acceptance of this new technology of lasik surgery is evident from the numbers ? over 1,000,000 surgeries have been performed to date using the IntraLase method.

One of the greatest advantages of the IntraLase is consistency in the positioning and dimensions of the flap. The second major advantage is that there is no physical contact of a blade with the eye; the cut is done using a laser.

There are considerably lesser side effects, with patients reporting reduced instances of inability to see well in places having a low light source. Besides, a corneal flap created using the IntraLase method of lasik surgery ensures that the flap falls back in the exact location after the procedure.

What does that mean for someone that is looking to have their eyes improved with the use of lasik eye surgery? For one thing, there are plenty of qualified doctors in the area. In some cases in some areas of New York, lasik eye surgery is offered by several physicians which means there is a bit of competition for your business. Of course, the cost should be one of the last things that you think about when it comes to having lasik eye surgery. New York is filled with qualified physicians that provide for the best possible reduction of risks and the best results possible. Still, there are those out there that aren?t as experienced and perhaps don?t have the best training. There is no question that you can have an excellent lasik eye surgery in New York. By insuring that you learn as much as you can about the surgeon that will be handling your surgery, you also improve your risks and get the best possible surgery.

6 Things to Ask Your Oklahoma City Lasik Eye Surgeon

Choosing an Oklahoma City lasik eye surgeon is one of the most important decision you will ever make. In Oklahoma City, there are a number of doctors who specialize in refractive laser eye surgery, and choosing a surgeon can be a tough decision. If you?re going to trust your sight to a surgeon, you want to feel confident that they?re well-trained and qualified to perform the procedure. Here are the six questions you absolutely must ask an Oklahoma City lasik eye surgeon before you commit to eye surgery:

1. Are you Board Certified? The answer must be yes, and then you should ask for details. There are different types of certification that ophthalmologists can acquire. The American Board of Ophthalmology certifies doctors, but doesn?t offer a specific certification for laser refractive surgery. Your Oklahoma City eye surgeon may be ABO certified without having actual Lasik or PRK certification. The American Board of Eye Surgeons offers peer-approved certification on specific laser procedures, and this is the best certification for an eye doctor to have. There is also a certification offered by the Council for Refractive Surgery Quality Assurance, who evaluate patient satisfaction and evaluate surgeons based on patient outcome.

2. How long have you been performing laser vision correction surgery? There?s no right or wrong answer to this one. But you should look for a surgeon who has several years of experience ? make sure, though, if the surgeon has been doing corrective eye surgery for 10 years or more that he?s up to date on all the latest procedures.

3. How many procedures have you performed on people with my particular problem? Again, there?s no one answer, but you want to know that you?re not the first patient in Oklahoma City who?s received this particular surgery form this eye doctor.

4. Who will be handling my pre-surgery examinations and after care? You want to know that your doctor will be personally handling every aspect of your case from start to finish. If there?s a problem after the surgery, you shouldn?t be sent to some other doctor on the other side of Oklahoma City, or only receive follow-up care from a nurse or assistant.

5. Do you have all of the equipment here in the clinic? It?s good to know where your surgery will take place. It might be on-site, in the doctor?s clinic, or he may be affiliated with a nearby hospital or medical center.

6. May I have references? A good doctor will have no problem with providing you with the names of local Oklahoma City patients who have had Lasik surgery. Ask for five references, and call them to find out how satisfied they are with the doctor?s work.

Lasik FAQ: Answers To Common Questions About Lasik Eye Surgery

* What is lasik surgery?

LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. This is a refractive surgical procedure which is performed by an ophthalmologist. This surgical procedure is done in order to correct the vision of the patient, thus lessening his or her dependence on any corrective devices such as contact lenses or eyeglasses.

* How risky is lasik eye surgery and what exactly are the risks?

Some patients are happy with the result of LASIK surgery. But, like other surgical procedures, risks are inevitable. This is why it is necessary that you know your limitations and the possible complications of the surgery.

The risks of LASIK eye surgery include:

Patients might lose their vision.

Patients may develop unbearable visual symptoms.

The surgery may either be undertreated or overtreated.

Patients might develop serious dry eye conditions.

* How much does lasik eye surgery cost?

If you opt for the traditional LASIK, the surgery can cost from 1,600 to 2,000 dollars per eye, but if it is customized LASIK that you want, it will cost you around 2,000 to 2,500 dollars per eye. The prices for LASIK surgery differ depending on your chosen LASIK surgeon.

* Does insurance cover Lasik surgery?

Although LASIK surgery is not a cosmetic surgical procedure, it is still considered elective surgery. Such surgeries are covered mostly in Asian and European countries, but most insurance policies in the United States, Canada and Latin America do not cover it. Furthermore, not even Medicare will cover it.

However, it is probable that the rate for LASIK is deductible on U.S. federal taxes. Therefore, before having the surgery, check to see if it can be considered a deductible health care expense.

* Is the Lasik procedure painful?

Patients do not experience any discomfort during the LASIK procedure itself, because the eye is given an eye drop anesthetic before the procedure takes place. If the patient suffers much discomfort after the procedure, he or she can take Ibuprofen or Tylenol during the first two days after surgery.

* How long has Lasik technology been around?

LASIK technology has been around for more than 10 years now. The first time it was performed in some clinics in the U.S was during the early 1990s. From that time, more than a million procedures of LASIK were performed. Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has endorsed it as the newest eye remedy technology.

* What procedures can a laser perform?

There are three types of procedures that a laser can perform. The most popular of the three is the LASIK. In this procedure, a thin coating of the cornea is removed to make a flap. This allows the laser to take tissue from underneath the flap. After the flap is replaced, eyesight is restored in an instant.

Another procedure is the LASEK or EPIFLAP surgery. This includes the incomplete removal of the outer layer of eye cells and the epithelium, which show the cornea. The cornea is flattened or otherwise reshaped using a laser, then the outer cells are repositioned and after several days, the eye will heal.

The third one is the PRK. This procedure includes the full removal of the epithelium or outer cells of the eye.

LASIK Procedures Explained - Can It Help Your Blurred Vision?

LASIK is the most commonly performed refractive surgery procedure and stands for Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis. Owing much to the technological advances, several new refractive surgery procedures have been developed. However, the procedure is still the most potent and prevalent treatment of all surgical interventions for the eye.

The prevalence of LASIK has also ensured that it is very much accessible to nearly everyone who desires to undergo the surgery. Therefore, finding an efficient eye surgeon in your vicinity won't be difficult at all. LASIK procedure can surely eliminate your vision problems and offer you crystal clear vision - something that every living soul desires.

In essence, the procedure makes use of a high-precision laser called the excimer laser, which is an ultraviolet chemical laser. The procedure involves cutting a flap in the cornea. The flap is folded back to make room for making incisions in the corneal tissue. Highly sophisticated computer-controlled equipment is used to perform the surgery. For instance, a sensor is used to measure the eye position around 4000 times per second. The laser is redirected to make precise incisions in order to reshape the cornea so as to ensure accurate refraction. This results in enhanced visual acuity.

LASIK is a reliable and rather safe procedure relative to other refractive surgery procedures. It is not that time-consuming either. Patients witness speedy recovery after the procedure. Most patients have a significant improvement in vision just after the procedure. Some patients may experience blurred vision, but this condition is alleviated within a week or two when the cornea is completely healed.

Another reason why this procedure is the preferred refractive surgery is because it has a minimal complication rate of 5%. Such a meager complication rate speaks volumes for the efficacy of LASIK. When you choose LASIK, you choose the best that technology has to offer. Therefore, you can easily rely on LASIK and need not be anxious about it.

Wavefront - Better Than Conventional LASIK Eye Surgery?

Traditional LASIK surgery achieves a simple correction of focusing power by reshaping the cornea with the aid of a laser. Wavefront LASIK is a variation of that conventional procedure and accomplishes a spatially varying correction based on readings from a wavefront sensor. In essence, a wavefront sensor measures the eye itself. It detects any aberrations by directing a weak laser source into the eye, and by sampling and processing the reflection off the retina.

Wavefront measurements reveal the irregularities of the lens, which cause optical aberrations (any deviation from a desired perfect planar wavefront). Wavefront custom sculpts the cornea to accomplish corrected vision. In many ways, Wavefront offers better results than traditional LASIK. The procedure is carried out by an ophthalmologist, with the aid of sophisticated computer-controlled equipment.

LASIK has certain potential side effects including halos or glare, which are caused due to induced spherical aberration. Wavefront has helped reduce instances of such cases where patients complain of post-operative halos or glares. A drop in such complaints is owing to the precise measurements provided by the wavefront sensor.

Thus Wavefront can help achieve a more optically perfect eye, since the corneal tissue area to be carved is measured more precisely using advanced technology and tools. But, wavefront aberrations are not the sole cause for all types of vision impairments. Therefore, Wavefront LASIK should not be treated as a panacea for all kinds of vision defects. However, eye surgeons claim that a great deal of success has been accomplished in patient satisfaction, relative to earlier refractive surgery procedures.

Though wavefront technology has been used for years by astronomers who require adjusting their telescope optics, its application to human vision has been discovered only recently. It's true that Wavefront is a superior procedure, but it's certainly not required by or suitable for everyone. It is imperative that you go through an elaborate wavefront diagnostic to determine if you are a potential candidate for it.

A Featured dallas lasik vision correction ArticleTales From the Lasik Waiting Room

As an experienced Lasik patient I thought I might give a glimpse into the worst part of the Lasik procedure... the waiting room. I have had a Lasik procedure twice, the co2 laser second being a follow hp laser jet up since one of my eyes needed additional work after the healing procedure was complete. I was distinctly less nervous about the second procedure, and observed lasik prices and talked to a number of the other Lasik clients that were waiting with me.

One was a young woman in her early twenties who talked incessantly trying to keep her mind off of any of the Lasik brochures and information on the table. She had been thoroughly oriented to both the Lasik operation and post-op procedures, but had brought along a few stuffed animals to keep her company during the operation. Most Lasik physicians recommend a minimum age of 18 due to sufficient maturity of the eye, but maybe waiting for some emotional maturity might be another factor lasik eye surgeons. On the other hand, I wondered what I looked and sounded like waiting for my first Lasik operation.

Talking to a few of the other Lasik clients, I realized I was not the only one in for a second Lasik procedure. Two others were like me in that they did not get sufficient improvement in their vision to satisfy themselves or the Lasik surgeon. In all of our cases, our first Lasik procedure of several months earlier went well, and none eye exam of us were particularly nervous.

It did surprise me, considering that it was 6:30 AM, of the variety of clothing styles of the Lasik clients. Most of us, considering the hour and the rather frigid temperature of the Lasik operating room and the waiting room, were dressed in snug and warm sweat suits or other comfortable wear. One Lasik patient was dressed in formal business attire with full makeup.

This puzzled me for at least two reasons: any makeup, lotions, or other things that could get into the eye are forbidden for at least 24 hours before the surgery, and it is highly recommended to go home and sleep as quickly as possible after the Lasik procedure. The only thing I could figure out was that she wasn't actually getting a Lasik procedure, but no one else is there at 6:30 AM. Her dominating and withering look made me decide that any pre-Lasik conversation with her was better left eye problems unsaid.

I was probably the fourth person escorted into a waiting room for a final discussion on Lasik post-op procedures, but I could not tell how long I had been waiting. I think they avoid clocks for a very good reason. The lady two seats down from me was calm enough about her Lasik procedure to go back to sleep while waiting, which seemed like an eminently sensible idea.

Each patient is offered a mild sedative before the Lasik procedure starts. It is mainly for psychological purposes, as my first Lasik experience was not painful at all. I did take it for my first experience, but my own Lasik history and the others I have heard in the waiting room make me think that I don't need it. But I take private eye it anyway, just in case.

I hope that this window into a Lasik waiting room helps give the attitude that for most people it is not a dreaded procedure, and for those of us that have had Lasik done, a rather uneventful one.

Although it also gives information useful to doctors, caregivers and other health professionals, it tells patients where and how to look for information covering virtually all topics related to lasik eye surgery (also Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis; LASIK eye surgery), from the essentials to the most advanced areas of research. The title of this book includes the word official. This reflects the fact that the sourcebook draws from public, academic, government, and peer-reviewed research. Selected readings from various agencies are reproduced to give you some of the latest official information available to date on lasik eye surgery. Given patients' increasing sophistication in using the Internet, abundant references to reliable Internet-based resources are provided throughout this sourcebook. Where possible, guidance is provided on how to obtain free-of-charge, primary research results as well as more detailed information via the Internet. E-book and electronic versions of this sourcebook are fully interactive with each of the Internet sites mentioned (clicking on a hyperlink automatically opens your browser to the site indicated). Hard-copy users of this sourcebook can type cited Web addresses directly into their browsers to obtain access to the corresponding sites. In addition to extensive references accessible via the Internet, chapters include glossaries of technical or uncommon terms.
